If Jesus is God why did He say...

My God, Why have you forsaken me?

Scripture provides the answer.

The Old Covenant prophesied the coming of the Saviour (Messiah) and Lord. Isaiah 9:6. foretold that, "For a child is born to us, a son is given to us; and the government is upon His shoulder; and His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace."

Matthew 1:18-25 Good News Translation (GNT)
The Birth of Jesus Christ

This was how the birth of Jesus Christ took place. His mother Mary was engaged to Joseph, but before they were married, she found out that she was going to have a baby by the Holy Spirit. Joseph was a man who always did what was right, but he did not want to disgrace Mary publicly; so he made plans to break the engagement privately. While he was thinking about this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, descendant of David, do not be afraid to take Mary to be your wife. For it is by the Holy Spirit that she has conceived. She will have a Son, and you will name him Jesus—because He will save his people from their sins.” Now all this happened in order to make come true what the Lord had said through the prophet,  “A virgin will become pregnant and have a Son, and He will be called Immanuel” (which means, “God is with us”). Before Jesus incarnation (being born of the virgin Mary)
Hebrews 13:8 tells us that, like the Father, Jesus never had a beginning. “Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, today and forever.” He was God who lived among us in the person of Christ.

So when Joseph woke up, he married Mary, as the angel of the Lord had told him to. But he had no sexual relations with her before she gave birth to her Son. And Joseph named Him Jesus. Copyright © 1992 by American Bible Society

When the apostle John wrote his account of the Gospel, he referred to Jesus as “The Word” which in context means 'God'.  John 1:1 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

351 Old Testament Prophecies (Predictions) Fulfilled in Jesus Christ

Old Testament prophets spoke of Jesus’ life and His death. An account of these prophecies were meticulously kept as evidence that God's perfect plan was coming to pass.

Prophecy Description Fulfillment
1. Gen 3:15 Seed of a woman (virgin birth) Gal 4:4-5; Matt 1:18 2. Gen 3:15 He will bruise Satan's head Heb 2:14; 1 John 3:8 3. Gen 5:24 The bodily ascension to heaven illustrated Mark 16:19...

Mathematically speaking, the odds of anyone fulfilling this amount of prophecy are staggering. Mathematicians put it this way:
1 person fulfilling 8 prophecies: 1 in 100,000,000,000,000,000 1 person fulfilling 48 prophecies: 1 chance in 10 to the 157th power 1 person fulfilling 300+ prophecies: Only Jesus!

Jesus Death and Crucifixion

When Jesus cried out during His crucifixion He was quoting Psalm 22 verse one, as it was coming to pass. This Psalm was written by David approximately 1000 BC before death by crucifixion was invented. Jesus’ crucifixion was in 30’s C.E. one thousand years later. Being a just God sin had to be covered by His own blood because the blood sacrifices of lambs without spot or blemish was not enough to pay for the penalty of humankind's sin.

When God manifested Himself wrapped in flesh and blood for a time such as this He relinquished His authority in order to carry out His eternal plan to redeem His people.  The Bible describes Jesus as our High Priest that endured the pain, suffering, and humiliation caused by a fallen humanity to overcome our last enemy 'death' which would have ultimately separated us from God for eternity had He not died in our place. He chose to die, He came to die, and He conquered death. Philippians 2:5-11 tells us that Jesus limited Himself (relinquished His authority while in his human body and when He eventually ascended into Heaven after His resurrection His Spirit returned to its rightful place - denoted as right hand).

No human High Priest was faultless, blameless, and holy except for Jesus (Hebrews 7:26-27). In the Old Covenant lambs without blemish were sacrificed on the eve of the Passover an annual Spring Feast still commemorated today to connect the Old Testament Holy Days to a time when Jesus Himself became the perfect Passover Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. The Feasts (Holy Days) of Leviticus are often referred to as Jewish holidays, but according to the Book of Leviticus chapter 23 The Lord spoke to Moses, “Tell the Israelite's (God's people consisting of both Jewish and Gentile believers). These are the appointed festivals with the Lord, which you must announce as holy assemblies". God was saying that this is important to Me and this is how I want to be worshiped and honoured.

I summation, For He, who had always been God by nature, did not cling to His prerogatives as God’s equal, but stripped Himself of all privilege by consenting to be a slave by nature and being born as mortal man. And, having become man, he humbled Himself by living a life of utter obedience, even to the extent of dying, and the death of a criminal even though He was without sin He bore sin our behalf. (Philippians 2:5-9 - Hebrews 1:8)

For there is one God, and one Mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. 1 Timothy 2:5, NASB The perfect Lamb of God that conquered death and paid the penalty for our sins once and for all.
